The Apple Foundation, a regional foundation serving eastern Stokes and western Rockingham counties, recently awarded $10,000 to the Stokes Opportunity Center (SOC), a vocational workshop for adults with developmental and other disabilities.
SOC, located in Walnut Cove, is operated by Arc Services, a subsidiary of the Arc of Stanly County, Inc., a statewide organization dedicated to serving individuals with disabilities. Approximately 45 adults attend SOC, where they have the change to learn vocational skills, get assistance in finding community employment, and participate in enrichment and community activities.
SOC partnered with Forsyth Technical Community College on the arts-based program. Forsyth Tech currently provides compensatory education for individuals who attend the Opportunity Center. Cathy Long, director of SOC, said, “We are delighted to be able to offer our individuals the opportunity to engage in various creative ventures. While providing vocational training remains our primary mission, we want our individuals to enjoy a well-rounded life.”
In addition to enjoying such activities as painting, crafting, acting, making music, and attending local and regional events, several trips are planned to locations such as Asheville, Raleigh, and Charlotte. Kris Jonczak, the compensatory education instructor, is excited about all the opportunities the arts-based program can offer. “It is wonderful to see the different ways our students communicate when given the chance to do so. We are so grateful to Mr. Ben Vernon of the Apple Foundation for making this program possible.”
